For me it's :TwinZero, they've got a couple of heavy tracks but generally very mellow (anyone who remembers Earthtone 9 will recognise the singer) more chilled out in a dark room music than trippy, though.

when it comes to ambient I enjoy Jääportit, Ulver and others that I can't think of now, heh

I'm sure we are all mostly familiar with Ulver, so I would like to stress Lars' suggestion of Jääportit. Wonderful, wonderful stuff! Ambient lushness but with tasteful beats. Floatyriffic.

There's this idiot on these forums by the name of Dunkelheit who makes ambient musics under the pseudonym of Almaach.

Of course! How could I forget?

+10, three thumbs up and a bakers dozen of aural cakes.

Yes, I meant to put Dunk's Almaach on my list too. I was just listening to some a few days ago. 8)

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. I definitely have a lot more to check out.

Here's what I picked up so far:

Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Michael Stearns - Encounter
Gulan - Space Projections
Telomere - The Stellar Sea
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
Steve Roach - The Magnificient Void, Darkest Before Dawn
Vangelis - 1492
Brian Eno - Apollo

Katatonia is metal? If so, that probably won't work. :)
Thanks though.

The whole "Dark Space" sub-genre seems to go over well with me. I definitely don't particularly like it when things are too happy "beedle-boop" sounding. For that reason, some of Jean Michel Jarre's stuff turns me off quite a bit. But Oxygene and Equinoxe seem to work for me, for the most part.

I'm definitely going to check out some more of the suggestions you guys posted. Thanks again!

After listening to a bunch of this stuff, i think i prefer material that has more to it than just floating in dead space. I think that I want to float in space and witness comets, shooting stars, eclipses, random asteroid fields, and spaceships.

So, "The Magnificent Void", while it fits the original thread title, is not really for me. It seems better suited for a soundtrack of a space documentary at an IMAX theater.

Agreed. Interesting that you should quote Sky Moves Sideways and Prodigal in the OP, as Steve Wilson has said on his site he believes Zeit to be one of the best albums of all time. I like it a lot, and am a little scared by bits of 'Nebulous Dawn' when listening to it in complete darkness. I think it was ahead of its time, perhaps not the best though.

Devin has quoted Rapoon before -- some songs are so-so, some songs are beyond awesome (search 'Groundswell' on Youtube). Also loads of Porcupine Tree songs don't set out to be floatey space songs, but they achieve that for me anyway, such as Fadeaway. In my opinion one of the top 10 songs ever written...

You just mentioned a song from a Porcupine Tree album (Up the Downstair) that I didn't have already. So, I had to get it!
Thanks.

Eluvium is not for me. I don't like piano. Also, I generally don't like vocals. I'm looking more for synth-based stuff.
I think my fav is potentially Spiral by Vangelis, the song, not the album.

I love the arpeggios sweeping around your ears in stereo, and then it crosses over in to that 80's style Miami Vice pulsing thing...the only think that ruins it for me is the King Arthur part with all the synth brass.
