I live in the 'temperate' south east and it's turning into a dustbowl down here.

That shot was taken on Kangaroo Island actually:)

Could you elaborate on what this means? I've seen the HDR effect a lot lately and thought it would be cool to try to reproduce, it it's even possible with my crappy camera.

I'd recommend it. I dont really shoot anything but HDR these days. Except for macro photography:

Its not a true HDR image, you need an expensive specialised camera for that.

But 3 photos all taken at different exposures. Under exposed, over exposed and exposed. Then you combine the frames. This gives you a wider dynamic range. And also allows all the elements to have an even exposure.

What sort of camera do you have?

It's what makes whole picture evenly exposed (in both dark and bright bits) due to combining few differently exposed shots. And makes me bored of itself, to be honest, its damn popular technique nowadays and I actually want to see a picture and be sure it REALLY looked that way.

Not to be rude, sans' photos are good, I wish I could do something that well. Even processing is good since I don't see that annoying halos which are often visible in poorly done HDRs (ok, except the photo with lone rock). But still, I'm just tad fed up with ze HDRs.

Fair enough I know where your coming from, not rude at all. I think its the massive amounts of crap (halo'd) HDR attempts that give it a bad name. Used sparingly you can achieve really nice results. However I think it is closer to what you would see exposure wise. The colour is definitely more dynamic than what the human I can see. But I'm not really going for naturalism either. I think they look a little more magical.

Cheers and thanks:)

I'd suggest having a look at this, and related videos or Google searches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVuDbcAfN_I

From what I understand, the problem with cameras is that they're not good at dealing with images with both very bright areas, and very dark areas. You either get things visible in the dark area with the light area as a big white spot, or the other way around. HDR takes the same picture several times, but with different white balance, then combining into one picture where both light and dark areas are visible.

Or, I suppose you could do it the other way around and have both light and dark areas blurred to white and black spots :D

It doesn't effect the white balance. Just the exposure. Exposure being the amount of light hitting the film or sensor for a given time period.

That sounded anal

See here for white balance explanation

I have an Australian friend who plans to move back there and take her 'pom' boyfriend with her.
So I hope to be over there at some point for a wedding and an extended holiday.
The country looks amazing, those photos just take me away from the crap view I have out of my window right now.

I'd say Florida's coasts are the only real reason to visit here. I dont really like the weather or the people but dammit I LOVE the coast!

Thanks! I wouldn't even begin to call myself a "photographer"...But I wouldn't mind getting into it more considering some of the areas right around where I live are very picturesque "Florida"...pretty well shown in the ones I posted though :P
