Paradise syndrome - Hetfield used to have some serious anger. He's just too country and western these days. He needs a reality check or just pack it in and get some line dancing licks to hum to.

Did this one also sound quite severely clipped for you people? It did for me and kind of ruined the listening experience.

Besides that, I kind of liked what I heard. It definitely seems like an improvement compared to the last few cd's. Although it still contains some of those Load-ideas it seems.

Really impressed, but Im a die hard Metallica fan. Mainly due to the fact that they were my gateway to good music. I accept and appreciate anything they do.

So, Im pleased to see theres some optimism in a metallica discussion, thats fuckin rare!

Overall the song feels like a mix between all their era's. I hear some puppets, some one, some fuel, and some unforgiven. No doubt this album will get plenty of hate no matter what it sounds like, because its not master of puppets and nothing ever will be and people need to realize that...

Oh and I believe James lost alot of his harsh vocal ability while damaging his voice on tour. Worked awhile just to get it to this point. At least thats what I remember from some kind of monster.

Yeah, it's the same for everyone, even the version they're selling on iTunes clips to hell. There's been a pretty big uproar about it on the Metallica forums, and apparently they're aware of the problem and are trying to fix it. Some of Rubin's past work has had similar issues though, so it's possible that the final product will sound like that. Which would be shit.

I like it. Yes, the drumming is typical Metallica and yes, the mp3 does sound a bit shit, but overall I think the songs good points far outweigh it's bad points. Like Soul Slave, I am a huge Metallica fan who loves everything they've ever done. Including St. Anger. The clean intro is reminiscent of both Load and Justice, but the main comparison I could make to it, strangely enough, was S&M! It has an epic quality about it that reminded me of the S&M concert straight away, and I think the two new songs on that show, -Human and No Leaf Clover, would sound great next to this new song.

As for the production, if they are aware of the clipping problems and are responsive enough to the fans, then I think it will be sorted for the release.
As for James' voice not being angry or rough enough, remember that this is a new album. On the Load sessions (Mama Said!) he often used a very clean voice through whole songs, yet on St. Anger he actually screamed once or twice. So just because he uses a clean voice through pretty much the whole of the new song, don't forget there is a whole album to come yet, and who knows what surprises there may be :)

Oh and Soul Slave, you are correct in saying James damaged his voice, but it wasn't live, and it wasn't during the St. Anger sessions. He did it during the recording of 'So What' at the same time as they did the black album, so now he does excercises to a cassette tape. Unless you're referring to a whole other time I dont know about, if so that I apologise and I bow to you :)

All in all, I am really looking forward to the new album. This is only their NINTH studio album in 25 YEARS. I'm not saying its not normal to release so little, but it just means they havn't got a lot of stuff out so personally anything they put out is welcomed!

No. It's way too late to redo the mastering based on the response to this song... We can only hope that someone Fucked Up while making the MP3 and that the actual master doesn't clip so horribly.

The song itself sounds cool, and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest :)

They removed it off myspace, though. So maybe the will correct it, it shouldn't be that hard, should it? Its the mater of cranking "squash the fuck of out of it" knob down from 11.

It shouldn't be hard, but it's too late now. If they want to have 10 million* copies in stores on sept. 12 they must have started the manufacturing a while ago already.

Many new CDs do have this clipping distortion, but it's almost never this bad. After the snare sound on St Anger, though, you never know what these guys will think of..

* Made up figure. Out of curiosity, does anybody know how many copies would generally be printed for the world-wide release of a high-profile album like this?

I wasn't expecting anything refreshing or original from Metallica anymore, and I'm actually quite happy that this is at least a decent song. I love the solo bits :D

I had let go of all hope after hearing the album title, album cover and the fact that they made Unforgiven III... Still holding my breath for that song, can't be good...

Unforgiven III better damn well be the best song on the album just because they actually did a song called "Unforgiven III"

I don't like My Apocalypse as much as Cyanide and TDTNC, but it's definitely not bad. (Maybe it will grow on me, I'm playing it for the fifth time at a row now)
So far the album is sounding good, well done Metallica! 8)

Maybe they're clipped on purpose, you know, people could leech and listen to these songs over and over again without buying for proper record, and that could harm Metallica's preciousss monies.
