I can see that this point is relevant...I like them, however they are a fun band to listen to and even more to play on guitar. May be they are overrated, they were definitely influential and shaped metal, though.

Saying I don't like them would be a gross understatement. They're fucking sellout gimps. And no, their 'early stuff' doesn't make up for the shite they've fed us today. James Hetfield is an absolute gobshite, I hate how in videos he always puts his face up really close to the camera. I dunno what he hopes to achieve from it.. and it looks like he's constipated or something. And Ulrich vs Napster? I'd take my chances funding communism or whatever music downloads claim to do.

I agree with you about the part concerning their newer stuff (I'll be welcoming their new album with open arms and an open mind to judge it for what it is, though ). I too think, that Lars has done a lot of retarded things (including the whole napster thingie) and has a huge atittude-problem.

May be it's just me, but I try to focus on the positive things they've done. I enjoy their first five albums and some songs off the later ones and that's enough for me to appreciate them. The bad, or stupid things I can ignore, they don't concern me.

OK but let that be the last post about metallica - it's off-topic. let's discuss the greatness of my (and my gfs) acting and imitating skills instead

As for influence Slayer, Death and Black Sabbath were much more influential over most of the metal I like
