I respect that the guys in Meshuggah wanted to "fix" what they perceived as deficiencies, but I liked the original better, too. However, now I have a groovy DVD...yippeee!

I have been a big fan of the original Nothing for some time, so I was very curious about the new one.

However, when I first heard it I found it to be definately less 'heavy' sounding. On repeated listens I agree that there is infinitely more clarity in the mix. Some parts sound incredibly much better, but it is a strange listen if you are a fan of the original. Overall I think it sits well next to the original on my CD rack. The DVD is neat too.

One thing that I definately think they messed up was on the artwork. The original had an awesome cover and fold out booklet. They did a cool thing with making the cover blue, but the rest of the package is very basic and they removed the neat booklet. This is one area that is definately better on the original! A minor gripe though.

Can't wait to hear what these guys come up with next! C33 is something special indeed and will be hard to top.

I think the lead guitars on the original are awesome, but rythm = festy. Do a quick comparison from Nothing to Catch 33 and you'll see what I mean. I am yet to hear the re-issue by the way.

i love the reissue, like, a lot. It's a better mix overall, and this is a drummer speaking (so you can either take it by the "he doesn't have an issue with the drums being low, so being a drummer, they're probably not that low" or "he's a drummer, he's just talking shit" )

it's indeed, the artist's baby. So he's free to change it. For exemple, i LOVE the original version of Storm on AE for several reasons. But devy totally changed the vocal lines on the Synchestra DVD. Why? beats me!

in all honesty, the newer version is cool, but it's such a different angle on the alum as opposed to the original. it's an entirely different colour of music, and I think maybe that's what put me off. I'm starting to get used to it more now though (and this room smells like talcum powder and babies...ugh).

Just a note, I don't think they actually changed the drums apart from maybe swapping a sample or two and redoing their mix. As far as I know they're still 'real.' Catch 33, on the other hand, uses the Drumkit From Hell.

turn up for the books, wikipedia gives it's word "The drums were also redone by triggering the original drum hits using Drumkit From Hell Superior".
but wikipedia is often wrong, since wikipedia also says that the new guitars are ibanez's, when only one is an ibanez and the other is a nevborn. so we have no proof really.
