100+ temps the last couple of days, 90+ before that. Lightning, thunder, wind and rain yesterday evening with the sun out. I'm not complaining tho - it was cool. Cool as in "kewl". Joe Cool. 8) Lasted about 20 minutes.

^ damn!

Coastal NorCal isn't so bad. We just don't have seasons.Temperate many days out of the year, or foggy. Some heat in there during summer. San Francisco never really gets too hot, but across the bridge in Oakland it can get hot... occasionally

90's+ last summer; but this has been the coldest summer I've ever experienced in years.

I understand that Death Valley in California is the hottest place in America. Never been, don't want to. Apparently in Needles, CA right now, it's 111 F What the shit?!

Any time someone says "Oakland" I just think of the Dave Chappelle stand up where he talks about crossing the bridge and some just yells "WELCOME TO OAKLAND, BITCH!" You have to watch it.

Is that the one with the talking baby on the corner? :D

I'm not sure, that's the Ghetto stand up. I think it was his second stand up with the "welcome to oakland" thing.

LOL No I haven't seen that! Sounds spot on though - that's pretty much how it is. Although I'm fortunate enough to live in a pretty nice area. I gotta look that up on youtube! :)

Apparently Oakland was ground zero for the whole hyphy thing, possibly purple drank, and... oh... ghost riding? I honestly don't know, I try to ignore that shit, it really gets on my nerves. Although that 'ghost ride my Volvo' video on youtube was pretty funny - mostly because I have the exact same car.

Hyphy and ghost-riding, yes, as well as the west coast's answer to the East's alternative hip-hop movement. Purple drank (codeine and soda) was invented in the south by DJ Screw who is unfortunately dead.

To clarify, ghost riding is when you idle your car so it drives slowly by itself so you can get out and dance next to it, and hyphy is a behavior and rap style that is fast-paced and obscure.

Oh I see - thanks for the clarification  I must say, purple drank doesn't seem very appealing.... at all. Sounds horrible actually.

Yes two guys actually did this  - Ghostride the Volvo *facepalm* At one point in the video, the guy's ghostriding in the trunk. He's in the fucking trunk *sigh*

Still laugh everytime though!

Yeah, DJ Screw died from a Codeine overdose. Codeine contributed to Pimp C's death as well, and since then Bun has been trying to stop everyone from drinking it. It's pretty sad. :(

Codeine is an opiate, the most widely used in the world. It's found in cough syrup.

On the flipside, ghost-riding can be pretty fun. Every time my friends and I used to get stopped by a train, we'd jump out of the car and either dance around to whatever type of music we were listening to, do some push-ups and sit-ups and squats, or just hang out on top of the car and play gameboy or something. It was good times.

You said you live in Illinois, so I know how that whole train thing can be as I have so much family in Indiana/Illinois and I know the trains there are utterly ridiculous.

Wow, you know a hell of a lot about this stuff - you're like the scholar of purple drank, those who've dies from it, and ghostriding :D
The idea of someone dancing around and doing push ups around a stopped car at a train does make me laugh quite a bit - awesome considering this day has been pretty un-awesome in itself. No real reason why, just one of those days.

If people are walking and a train comes, they can climb over it because it's moving so slow. Utterly ridiculous is a good word for it, but we take it all in stride.

Pimp C and DJ Screw's death were pretty saddening for me. Also I love the underside of hip hop culture (breakdancing, mcing, beatboxing, graffiti, djing, ect). Urbanism at it's finest. Unfortunately knowing about the upsides of a culture means knowing the downsides of it, too.

And I'm sorry you're having a bad day. Cheer up.

A girl, a friend of some friends, was in a major car crash recently. The two lads she was with died in the crash, but I don't know who they were, but she (Roxanna) was taken into intensive care, but is thankfully recovering well, although she has no memory of what happened and her Mum doesn't want anybody to tell her until she's in a better condition.

Whats strange though, is that for the first couple of days a big rumour was going round that she died in hospital. Some people (on facebook) were saying she is, others weren't sure or were saying she's still alive, but it was very confusing/strange. Not sure where that began, or maybe it was just a big case of chinese whispers.

Apparently the car was just, pretty much nothing left except her seat. Scary.

I don't know the circumstances of it either. Not sure who was driving (though im pretty sure it wasn't her), not sure if it was because they were speeding, or maybe a slippery road, or the fault of another driver. I'm sure more info will come out eventually, but for now it doesn't matter I suppose, at least she survived.
