I wasn't sure in which section to ask this, so I took my chances with this one.

So, I want a program so I can convert videos of my band from the huuge files they are into smaller ones, so I can upload them on the intarwebz and such. I need a few things from this program:

1. It has to be FREE

2. It has to be possible to use for a NEWBIE, wiouth too many pro-words

3. It has to be able to run on a AMD Turion Dualcore 1.8 Ghz with 1 Gb RAM

Can anyone help me?

I understand about 8 % of VirtualDub, but thanks! let's just hope I'm a fast learner.

That's a lot of compression. Unless the original short version is a really short movie, it's going to look like crap when you're done.

It would be helpful to know the current format, size, length and quality of the movie, and the format you want to convert it to.

Format: AVI
Size: 6,71 GB / 720x576 pixels
Length: 0:31:34
1536 kbps

Is this any help? :?

I've also got one that's 19 minutes, and one that's 6 minutes. I think I want to convert all of them into MPEG or AVI.

Wow, half an hour and still 6.7GB? You should be able to reduce that size quite a lot. As far as I know, most TV shows that are recorded in HD and are about 20, 25 minutes long, end up 175MB.

Anyway, I'd go with Archetype: give ffmpeg a try. It plays and converts pretty much everything :)

Make it 320 x 240 first of all that will help a lot. Trying to keep full rez won't work.
